Alternative route: Take the mountain hiking route from Sunnbüel cable car base station and follow the Kander waterfalls to the Gastern road. Shortly after the stone bridge, take the walkway over the river Kander to Hotel Waldhaus. Soon afterwards, you will see the start of the mountain hiking route to the Balmhornhütte.
After passing through woodlands and a steady climb, the valley opens out at Selden (Hotel Steinbock and Hotel Gasterntal-Selden). This is the start of the route to Gfelalp and Lötschen Pass. Another trail continues as far as the Heimritz inn, the start of the route to Kanderfirn.

Getting thereThe access road to the Gasterntal is located at the very end of Kandersteg about 400 m after the valley station of the Sunnbüel cable car. The road leads over a rock gallery and through 2 tunnels into the mountain valley at around 1352 m above sea level and is only open in summer.
A fee for the use of the road costs CHF 15.00 per day, which can be paid at the ticket machine, with SEPP, or with PayByPhone at the beginning of the road or at the Tourist Center Kandersteg.
Attention: Please note that there is a timetable for the first section of the route and that it is not possible for cars to cross. You may go up from a quarter to five and go down from a quarter to half past five.
